GAZIANTEP EMIR ALI HAN PRESERVATION PROJECT

Emir Ali Han is located at the historical city center in Gaziantep, Turkey. The history of the han dates back to the Ottoman Period. It is a two storey han and is one of the largest hans in Gaziantep.

The building was exhibiting high architectural quality and diverse structural and material problems. East wing of the building was completely collapsed, whereas only the first floor spaces of south and west wings were up during the time of study. The shops, which are facing the street on the north and south facades were still in use, however the spaces facing the courtyard were utilized as storage spaces. The courtyard itself was being used as a parking lot.

Total of fourteen students from different disciplines (ten architects, two interior architects, one urban designer, and one civil engineer) were expected to develop a preservation and adaptive-re use project.  The first stage of the project was the documentation and analyses of the present condition of the urban fabric and building by measured and photographic surveys, structural and material analyses and the evaluation of the building elements. In the second of the project, a research, which was aiming to understand the life of the building in its context was conducted, in order the understand the previous phases of the building in different periods. The third stage was the preservation and adaptive-re use project, which was aiming the continuation of the cultural property aided by its new function. In this stage, the main preservation principles were determined; the new function was designated; intervention proposals towards integrity and stability of the building were done and an adaptive-reuse and design project, answering the current needs with full respect to the existence of the cultural property was developed.
